Job Description
Our
research group in Cork is seeking an experienced researcher to work in a
software defined networking (SDN) project under a Marie Curie Research
Fellowship. This is a collaborative project with a number of leading
European research institutions. EMC’s role in the project is to
investigate SDN deployment strategies within and between data centres.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Background
in virtualisation technologies, centralised networking, and security
management; demonstrates a passion for networking and distributed
programming.
- Strong
programming skills with a solid understanding of object oriented
languages and principles; solid hands on coding with a modern
programming language, C++, C#, Java, Ruby or Python.
- Good understanding of WAN traffic engineering and QoS technology
- Network Protocol stack development experience
- Practical expertise in cloud computing technologies, in particular Infrastructure-as-a-Service or Platform-as-a-Service
- Strong
technical knowledge in software development methodologies, design and
implementation; experience with enterprise software design patterns and
tools.
- Excellent
understanding of software development process, including specification,
documentation, quality assurance, debugging practices and source
control systems.
- Strong analytical and design skills; a natural curiosity to go beneath the surface of a problem.
- Strong skills in research and implementation; demonstrated capability to define research plans and carry out leading research.
- Ability to understand business issues as they impact networking and software development.
- Established publisher of research results through either professional journals, academic conferences or patents
- Strong communications and interpersonal skills.
- High energy levels, self-motivating and autonomous; able to perform research with minimum guidance.
Preferred Skills
- Experience
with EU Framework projects including day to day execution and
management, development of deliverables, coordination of research
activities and scheduled reporting.
- Understanding of networking, system administration, and security architectures.
- General understanding of routing, switching and wLAN technologies including TCP/IP, Ethernet, VLANs.
- Experience and knowledge of service interface and public APIs.
- Knowledge and understanding of open source projects and protocols such as Openstack or OpenFlow.
Requirements
- PhD in engineering, computer science, information systems, mathematical or physical sciences.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
Other requirements
- Willingness to travel.
- Excellent communication in a cross functional organisation to achieve maximum results.
- Ability to represent EMC externally in business and research communities.
