Initially created in 2003 to improve the Government's performance as a shareholder, the Shareholder Executive (ShEx) now has a portfolio of some 20 complex businesses, spread across eight major central Government departments, ranging from Royal Mail and the Green Investment Bank, to the Ordnance Survey.
It also provides corporate finance advice for central Government, working on a broad range of projects, particularly with BIS, HM Treasury and Cabinet Office.
ShEx is responsible for advising Ministers on the exercise of the Government’s rights in order to maximise value within the framework set by public policy objectives. For the assets in the portfolio, this includes making board appointments, agreeing strategic and financial plans, setting targets and incentive packages, monitoring progress against business plan and budgets, being prepared to take appropriate action if targets are not met and working with relevant teams in other Government Departments.
Crucial to ShEx’s success has been the development of a, high calibre team combining career civil servants with externally-recruited commercial and corporate finance specialists. As part of the ongoing flexible resourcing of this team, ShEx is now looking to recruit a number of external corporate finance Analysts.
