The applicant must demonstrate accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. Integrate and develop processes that meet business needs across the organization and have an influence on long-term planning. This role contributes to the overall strategy and manages complex issues within functional areas area of expertise.
Identify, develop, evaluate, and introduce engineering solutions to meet near term and long range engineering needs.
Provide technical consultation on product problems throughout the business including supplier and field support.
Lead and provide the key technical direction to large projects with critical business impact.
Maintain an active role in developing and defining the state of the art in own technical specialty in order to anticipate, apply, adapt or develop technologies for product introduction, quality, performance, cost improvements and problem resolution in meeting current and future business needs including adherence to schedules and estimated costs
Support other GE businesses, internal & external customers, and suppliers as required.
Provide technical consultation to cross-functional teams throughout the business to improve or resolve manufacturing, product center, supplier, or field issues
Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters.
Use knowledge and expertise to market winning proposals in anticipation of business product needs.
Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company.
Provide technical guidance, direction and training to new and experienced Senior engineers, Lead engineers, engineers, specialists, technicians and co-ops.
Specific Responsibilities
Interpretation of international codes and standards.
Participate in R&D activities under the instruction and supervision of the Chief Engineer.
Participate in Technical Investigations and Studies under the instruction and supervision of the Chief Engineer.
Co-ordinate and conduct (or supervise) qualification testing of new products and/or fault diagnosis of returned products in the Engineering laboratories.
Conceptual design of components and systems.
Creation of Functional Design Specification for specific equipment.
Responsible for management of engineering work within pre-determined budgetary targets of engineering hours and material cost.
Supervision of a small design team.
To ensure that the design of products are maintained in line with appropriate field proven and/or current technologies.
To ensure that best practice is followed to achieve maximum levels of safety, quality and efficiency are sustained.
Extensive liaison with suppliers and customers to discuss technical specifications, manufacturing queries, procurement queries etc. Will be expected to represent GE Oil & Gas in a technical capacity at any level (internally or externally)
Internal and external presentation of designs and concepts.
Organising/coordinating events and presenting to suppliers and customers.
“Time and Budget” management of off-line indirect engineering initiatives linked to engineering process improvements, feasibility studies, product development / improvement, product qualification etc.
Provide a consultation service of “specialist” knowledge for the engineering team (and other relevant parts of the organisation) as required.
Liaise with the cross business teams to assist in formulating engineering strategy; including resource loading, promotion and development of new ideas and concepts for product range improvement and/or development.
Assist, if requested, with conducting internal annual and mid-term appraisals, and with conducting interviews for engineering vacancies available in the group.
Assist Systems Engineers and marketing department to establish optimum technical solutions in support of new business acquisition in the form of specialist advice, bid preparation, technical review.
Assist in the preparation and approval of Procedural Instructions and Codes of Practice.
Qualifications:
Degree qualified, Chartered Engineer.
The post holder shall have an engineering background and will have a good understanding of Company codes of practice and relevant national and international standards.
Needs very strong experience in the Company or an associated field of industry.
Flexibility to work across the full range of the Company products within their particular discipline.
Must be able to communicate effectively – verbal and written English.
Must be computer literate.
Must be capable of multi-tasking and working to agreed schedules and be ‘commercially aware’ in engineering solutions.
It would be advantageous that the Principal Electrical Engineer was expert in the design of functional safety related electrical equipment in accordance with the Functional Safety Standard IEC61508 applied to the offshore industry and, in particular, subsea control equipment.
Previous experience at principal engineer level or deomonstratable level of responsibility commensurate with operation at principal engineer level.
