Job Summary & Responsibilities
WHO WE AREThe Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. is a leading global financial services firm providing investment banking, securities and investment management services to a substantial and diversified client base that includes corporations, financial institutions, governments and high-net-worth individuals. The firm is headquartered in New York and maintains offices in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Hong Kong and other major financial centres around the world.
BUSINESS UNIT AND ROLE OVERVIEW
The role will entail working closely with and for the Prime Brokerage, Clearing, Execution and Futures (“PCEF”) Legal team in London, as well as working with our colleagues in Hong Kong and New York.
The PCEF business provides services including margin lending, securities lending, custody, market access, capital introduction and access to derivatives clearing and execution for hedge fund and institutional clients.
The role requires the ability to work independently from day one and to manage a diverse and complex workload meeting tight deadlines. Lawyers in our team work closely with a diverse group of clients across our businesses and thrive on the pressures of delivering consistently high quality advice to a dynamic and constantly evolving business.
Our team consists of seven lawyers sitting within the Legal Department of Goldman Sachs International. We cover all aspects of our PCEF business. The role will have dual reporting lines, and you will be reporting to the VP heading the Prime Brokerage team and the VP heading the Derivatives Clearing team in the Legal Department, as well as having the opportunity to work alongside several other PCEF lawyers and documentation professionals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are recruiting a junior lawyer to join the team advising our PCEF business, with the opportunity to be involved in all business areas within the PCEF business unit. We anticipate that the role will involve supporting all aspects of the prime brokerage and derivatives clearing business from pitches and projects managed by the sales and marketing team through to the structuring of an account and account opening procedure, negotiation of account documentation, securities lending agreements, capital introduction, support to the client services team on transaction-specific questions, the margin and risk management process and the development of new products. Legal is also actively involved in structuring and implementing funding arrangements for the synthetic products group business. Legal also advises the Consulting and Capital Introduction businesses on its activities in Europe, including with respect to conferences. The role will also involve examining and advising on the impact of new regulation as it relates to the PCEF business and PCEF clients, with a particular focus on the application of EMIR and AIFMD.
There will be opportunities to work with the other areas of the PCEF team more broadly, advising on a wide range of issues.
Basic Qualifications
SKILLS / EXPERIENCEWe are targeting qualified lawyers in the 1-4 years PQE range, although would be willing to consider candidates with a different experience profile. Candidates who can demonstrate a strong grounding in either derivatives or securities law and regulation are preferred (although other candidates will be considered). Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate relevant post-qualification experience either with a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel, preferably within a financial institution.
